Building Financial Unity: Your Roadmap to Money Conversations

This Week from the Haven

Good afternoon there!

Let’s talk about something that can feel a little intimidating but has the power to strengthen your relationship: money conversations.

Did you know the average household carries about $10K in credit card debt? If that number feels a little too familiar, you’re not alone. But here’s the thing — you can take control, and it starts with honest conversations and intentional planning.

Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful.
1 Corinthians 4:2

Step 1: Transparency is Key

Have you ever felt nervous pulling up your bank app? Facing your finances head-on can be tough, but ignoring it makes things worse. Start by asking:
- What types of debt do we have (student loans, credit cards, etc.)?
- What are the balances, interest rates, and minimum payments?

Laying it all out on the table builds trust — and gives you a clear starting point.

Step 2: Understand Your Money Mindset

What’s your view on debt — a necessary tool or something to avoid at all costs? Maybe one of you thrives on spreadsheets, while the other prefers to “wing it.” Understanding your perspectives helps you find common ground.

Step 3: Create a Plan That Fits You

Will you tackle debt with the snowball method (smallest debts first for momentum) or the avalanche method (highest interest first for efficiency)? Find a strategy that motivates you both.

Step 4: Money Dates – Yes, They’re a Thing

Picture this: a cozy evening with coffee (or tea) where you check in on your finances. Sounds better than a stressful “we need to talk” chat, right? Regular money dates help you stay accountable without the pressure.

Step 5: Saving, Spending, and Giving — Finding Balance

Ask each other:
- What’s our plan for unexpected expenses?
- How will we track our spending — budgeting apps, spreadsheets, or something else?
- How much do we want to give — and where?

Being proactive in these areas keeps financial tension from creeping in.

Step 6: Dream Big Together

What does your ideal future look like? A home by the lake? Traveling the world? Early retirement? Aligning your dreams now gives you something exciting to work toward — together.

Your Next Step: Plan your first money date this week. Bring a sense of curiosity rather than judgment. Ask each other thoughtful questions, and most importantly — listen.

You’ve got this!

In expectation,

Terrell and Jen

This Week from the Haven Happy Thursday Reader! Have you seen the new Verizon Wireless commercial about satellite connectivity? No matter how distant...
